Black Gas Mask Project in Progress

These are two parts to what I am seeing as a three part mask. A hood I already have is the third. It is meant to be mechanical, but earthly too I used plaster strips to sculpt a skull like face and it almost gives the appearance of coal or stone. My plans are to use it in a film before the end of summer. I'll have finished pictures of the mask and full costume soon.

Experimental Film (2009)

This is my experimental film VETA. Veta is a female name that means God's promise and knowledge. The protagonist of this film is on an ever ending journey for a women. The face is a constant he is always seeing despite the women being different. Time does not exist in this world. The protagonist meets himself at various points in his life as a reflection of his journey and why he must go on his journey.

This was a mask created for an experimental film called "VETA." The character is an old version of the films protagonist he has been searching for someone he will never get to and it shows in his worn flesh. He is the oracle acts as a warning but the force that push the protagonist that must go through the journey regardless.

This piece came about when a full mask broke, but it allowed me to focus on the lips. The mouth is such an important aspect of expression. Those lips of the mask seem expressionless, but without the eyes and the top half cracked and broken it almost gives it a look of deep sadness an individual that has been broken down.

This was also made for the contemporary critique course. Plastic utensils are a great medium for their bone like look. I like the idea that this vicious creature is portrayed as a kitsch subject. It also creates interesting shadows when a light is moved through it.

This hybrid human shark mask was created for a contemporary critique course. It's based on Japanese Noh demon masks. It is a face that is so menacing it comes off as humorous like a b-movie monster. It is a mask more for a display than to wear.

The female figure is stenciled then added to with sharpie marker. This is a piece based on visibility of wind. The image of the violin adds the scene by giving a sense of sound. The crow soars through the wind and the wind flows over the skin of the female. The painting is based very much on the beauty and simplicity in nature and the natural.

This is a helmet I created in my own time. I was planning a short film based on a suicidal space cadet, but it never came into fruition. The visor is removable but also not transparent which makes it difficult to move around, but it gives it an almost ancient armored helmet look.

I do not own the rights to "Pride" by Manchester Orchestra and do not have the permission, but this is a film made in an educational environment.

This is an experimental environmental existential film. The protagonist is on a search to see where he belongs being man he searches in an educational setting leading to a career. As trash he searches where it originates and where it will end up. As dog he searches the environment. In the end he finds that it does not matter where he is because in the end everything returns to the world. In time the only thing left will be the earth.

This is the mascot head that was part of a full costume created for a fashion trashion show. I had built a body in the same fashion as the head in addition to a tear away garbage bag jersey to reveal a slogan "go big or go home." I later used this mask in a short experimental film titled "Man Trash Dog."

Spero is a sculpture made for a Costume Design course. I chose the name Spero because it sounds like Sparrow, but also because it is I hope in Latin. It is a mystical creature half man half bird, but all dead. It is resemblance of a gargoyle standing stoic. The materials chose add to the character almost as if a garbage bag had been ripped open and this creature emerged making it grounded in earthly while looking like a creature that is beyond this world.

This is an instillation sculpture that was located in a back dark room that is only accessible by a small square door a place where few venture. The heart hangs below the mask. It is reminiscent of an pharaoh's death mask. The sparrows on it's shoulders much like Odin's ravens act as a part of the god free to fly, but only so far before their strings run out. The Egyptian's believe sparrows were the stars and they would carry souls to their afterlife. The heart hangs because it is a very human element and the gods of myths each had their human traits this god is brought closer to humanity by being attached to its flesh. This piece is about wonder and searching for something that still exists despite its creators demise.

This is a found object sculpture for a New Art forms course. In this the use of symbols in the sculpture is really what holds it together. It is a very basic notion of chaotic new beginnings. The phoenix rises from the fire hold onto the eight pointed arrows the symbol for chaos. It's also as if the bird is steering the wheel into some undetermined destination.

This is an experimental film featuring my gas-mask. It is a mediative expression of the nature of this mysterious character. He is on a Sisyphean struggle going from place to place killing creatures that may solely exist for him to destroy. Fire is such a chaotic element its length never steady never measurable, this is the force that is this character.

My best sculptural pieces are often masks. This mask was created on my own time after viewing a WWII gas mask. I wanted to however create my own unique mask that I could later use in a film as a unique character. There is something very alien about the mask almost as if it were the face of the character. It is very rugged and mechanical almost as if it could come alive adding intrigue to the mask.

This was a sculpture for Pro-Seminar in the Creative Arts an entry level course. I used a pre-made template for the helmet available on the internet to build the helmet from the video game Halo. My concept behind this piece is that this artifact is treated as a relic the original object built upon with graffiti that tells a story. The back piece is the word imagine. This piece is all about inspiration being inspired by art forms and bringing them together to create something that reflects myself as an artist. I am constantly trying to bring everything I learn together. In this piece I tried to accomplish that by treating the helmet as an already existing object that could be found amongst over grown grass forgotten except by those who mark it and move on. It's an ever changing evolving sculpture.

I have not painted in a while. I have never been able to grasp painting fully, but what I like about it is the story it tells. Wheat field with Crows is mistakenly believed to be Van Gogh's last painting, but it was one of his last. Three days before Van Gogh died he went out into a field and shot himself in the chest. He managed to make his way back surviving the three days later dying from that wound. In every one of his paintings Van Gogh's passion can be seen. His instability fueled some of the greatest works of art. The concept for this painting is that Van Gogh's bled for his passions and every brush stroke shows that. The crows fly around as these mystical creatures spawned from the mind-scape of a man so disturbed, yet beautiful in his creations. As with many of Van Gogh's works the theme of man's mortality is in this painting. Van Gogh died an obscure artist, but his works lived on and he has become immortal.

I'm calling this the imaginary world of because it is the place for all of my creations and thoughts on what inspires me. The world is what I make it. I believe that there is a creative solution to any problem. I am always looking to improve in anything I do I take what I learn from each project in hopes the next one will be better.
